Students will be guided in creating original works of art that demonstrate knowledge of the principles of design. With an emphasis on studio production, this course is designed to develop higher-level thinking, skill and craftsmanship, art criticism and aesthetics.
Studio Performance:
The standards are HIGH in this class.
Student should work consistently during each session. Students are expected to be engaged with the process and attempt his/her best to remain focused on the learning process. Student should appropriate supplies immediately upon arrivalto the class. TEXTING, PHONE CALLS OR OTHER SOCIAL MEDIA ARE NOT PERMITTED IN THE CLASSROOM.
Breaks are not more than 5-10 minutes within a 90 min. class. Students must inform the teacher BEFORE you leave for break. Breaks are not be taken during the first 15 minutes or the last fifteen minutes of the class.
Absences and late arrivals must be excused in PowerSchool. The student must use the clay, tools and supplies as instructed and returns all supplies to the appropriate storage areas. Each individual must clean up his/her work area 10 minutes prior to the end of the session
Studio Performance Grade:
The rubric below is a guideline at to how the instructor awards each particular “student performance score” each week.
25-23 Student works consistently during the session. The student is engaged with the process and tries his/her best to remain focused on the learning process. Student obtains supplies such as clay, wood, as well as any tools needed for the particular assignment immediately upon arrival in the art room. The student cleans her/his individual tools and work surface area PRIOR to leaving the studio AND also contributes to the final cleanup of the 5-6 person student work table. (i.e. The student sees there is clay debris on the other side of her/her table and thoughtfully wipes it with a clean sponge). Student consistently informs the teacher when he/she is going to leave the room to take a 10 min break. All absences and tardiness are EXCUSED in PowerSchool.
22-21. Student works during the class session yet was observed stopping infrequently to attend to social distractions. The student needs to be reminded to set up his/her work area at the beginning of class and properly store his/her work. The student cleans up his/her own space in front of the table and floor BUT does not contribute to the general cleanup of the general table area. The student forgets once or twice during the grading period, to inform the teacher she/he is leaving the room. Student is observed texting or using other social media.
19-15 Student works sporadically during the session. The student is observed not focused on genuinely thoughtful work that is relevant to the established goals and outcomes at the time (i.e. moving clay around for 20-25 minutes yet not making an attempt to construct/create a significant clay sculpture. Student is observed texting during class.) The student leaves the room without directly informing the teacher.
15-0 Student may or may not be present in class yet does not make an attempt to arrive on time, nor follow the general expectations of the class as outlined above. The student does not make a consistent effort to begin nor effectively complete a project. In general, the art work observed appears to be haphazardly done without proper care and sufficient thought.
Presentation of Work:
The student MUST PERSONALLY present the work of art to the teacher BEFORE a score will be placed in PowerSchool. The student shows the work directly to the teacher (Elena Flores) and requests a grade. The student may also be asked to present the work for a grade during a critique.
All ceramic projects will have two 50 POINT scores. The first score will be given immediately after the clay piece is created (BEFORE BISQUE FIRE) the second 50 POINT will be given AFTER the glaze, underglaze, stain or paint has been applied. Rubric for art work will be given to the student at the time it is assigned. Non- ceramic projects have one 50 point grade.
Writing About Art:
Students will be writing periodic artist statements or descriptive essays. The requirements of each will be provided to the students as each writing assignment is given.
Writing assignments will also be given as a means to critique one’s own art or the artwork of others.
Incomplete or Missing Projects:
Missing or Incomplete work will be recorded as a zero until you complete the assignment and turn it into the teacher. If the student has an excused absence on the day the assignment is due, the student may receive full credit if it is turned in the next scheduled session. For other late work, points will be deducted for each day it is not turned in after the deadline. Credit will not be awarded for work that is more than two weeks late. The student may “make up” missed work, during your lunch, or during a free block period.
